How Safe Are We? 25 Million Sony Accounts Hacked

The recent breach in Sony’s security has made me question the current security we have online.   Reports said that as much as 24.6 million personal accounts have been compromised.  What irks me more is that this breach in security was not the first time.  The 77 million Sony Play Station gamers have also been affected previously.  Moreover, tens of thousands of financial accounts from all over the world have been stolen, hacked or maliciously intruded.  I’m aware that such companies are big targets for hackers for whatever reason.  But what’s surprising is that they are in the business of online gaming and are aware of the threats.

Although the spokesperson from Sony said that there was no evidence of any illicit use of the stolen information, the issue here is the breach in Sony’s security.

Some of the information that were stolen includes:

  • Names
  • Address
  • E-mail
  • Birth dates
  • Gender
  • Contact number
  • Login and passwords

At first glance these data may seem trivial.  But all these can be used to access more important personal and financial records.  In fact, one article said that as much as 20,000 credit card and back account numbers were compromised.

I’m not a big online gamer, but I’m furious at what happened.  This can happen to any online database where I’ve given personal information in confidence.

The internet is a growing world and with it the risks are evolving as well.  How safe are we?

Any info given online should be protected. I've given personel details to companies too.

There is always some hackers out there who just love the challenge.

Hi Shanaya nice to see you again. I'm not much of a gadget freak, but I do worry about the personal info I give companies. It's just irritating that we gave them personal details and they can't protect it.

Sangre how are you doing? Nice of you to drop by. There are always hackers everywhere. But if companies requires us to provide them with personal information, then they'd better do a god job protecting it. It's part of the trust that we extend to them. I often talk about customer service in my hubs and this is one huge failure in customer satisfaction.

It amazes me how poorly big corporations respond when it comes to our privacy - all they issue is an apology - leaving the masses to clean up the mess. Heavy fines are what will make the difference. And it's time to stop doing business with corporations that are so careless.

Thanks for the info - rated up!

Thanks for the vote up BKCreative. Yes, I think fines and something like that can make them be more careful.

I've been a victim of hackers! But in my case I knew who it was. And I hate it!!!! nothing compares to the feeling of invaded privacy. But this is really bad, people who hack are really crazy. The distress they cause and such; it's just really sad.

That's really an awful experience krisingreen. Before hacking was just an ego boost to a few people. Now, it's really becoming more organized. Identity theft and industrial espionage are common motivators - of course the ego boost is till there.

@jpcmc...It seems in this growing technological age that security questions will continue to be on the rise, but at the same time, don't forget that for every thief, there is a good guy looking to counteract the damage. Secondly, we all need to do a better job of protecting ourselves by not being so quick to give out personal information inappropriately.

hello there Barbsbitsnpieces. True, with all the theft and cyber crimes going on out there, everyone must do his part in battling this invasion of privacy. Unfortunately many are not taking the threat seriously.
